One moment, she was standing, and the next, she was on the floor with Taven’s body pressing her down.

Her ears rang, and she tasted blood as she lifted her cheek from the floor. Bright red and yellow lights flashed above.

Everything hurt.

Calypso tried to take a deep breath and coughed instead. Her lungs ached and throbbed. She spat debris, dirt, and blood onto the floor.

“Get off me,” she wheezed, not able to hear her own words past the ringing in her ears.

Nothing.

“Taven, move!”

Still nothing.

Turning her aching neck, she sputtered as her nose brushed his cheekbone. Her eyes widened. His mouth was slack, eyes closed. Oh, no!

“Taven?”

No response.

“Please don’t be dead,” she rasped. They’d somehow blame her for this, she just knew it. Caly bumped her forehead against his temple. “Wake up!”

He groaned, his lashes fluttering a moment before his eyes opened. His pupils were blown wide, filled with pain and confusion. He scanned her face and blinked repeatedly, like he couldn’t figure out how he’d gotten into this predicament.

“Are you okay?” she wheezed.

He spoke, but she couldn’t hear the words. Calypso shook her head, which caused the pain in her neck and head to flare up. She jostled him with her shoulder.

“You’re too heavy.”

His eye widened, and a moment later his weight was gone. Hands seized her by the arm and pulled her to her feet. She swayed as the president’s son spoke, his face creased with worry.

Guards stormed down the hallway and encircled them. Her eyes burned, and she wiped them with the back of her dirty hand. Caly balked as her hand came away with blood on it. How bad was she hurt? She didn’t get a moment more to ponder it, as Taven propelled her forward by her elbow.

The hallway rolled beneath her feet, and she dry heaved, but the president’s son didn’t stop; neither did the guards. They stumbled down the hallway, and she glanced over her shoulder, catching a glimpse of the mess left behind. The entire banquet wall had been blown out. Black smoke billowed from the room, and giant chunks of concrete lay across the floor.

All those people.

Jei.

“Stop!” she yelled. “I need to get to Jei!”

No one stopped. If anything, Taven’s grip became firmer.

She jerked against him and tried to go back, her feet scrambling to find purchase on the slick floor. Another guard grabbed her left arm and helped the president’s son drag her away from the disaster. Tears streamed down her face. Was Jei okay?

She has to be.

After a few more twists and turns, they ended up in a massive studio apartment. Taven released her; the guard towed her to the gigantic bed and sat her on the end. She shook uncontrollably and caught only snippets of conversation as her hearing came back.

“…don’t tell me that. Who is responsible for this?” Taven shouted, waving his hands in the air. Blood ran down the side of his face from a nasty wound at the edge of his hairline. “Is my father okay?”

“We’re doing everything we can.
